Labor market projections for the next 20 years show enormous growth in areas of computer programming and everything related to digital technologies. In fact, digital literacy -- knowing and being able to use digital technologies -- is becoming one of the most important factors for social mobility. Reading and writing electronic literature helps develop digital literacy in our children and promotes interest in programming. What is electronic literature? Electronic literature is that which is written and designed to take advantage of the capabilities of digital technologies. For example, the texts we normally write are designed for the printed page. Letters, words, paragraphs, verses, and stanzas stay still on the page because ink placed on paper does not move. But the digital word can move, change over time, dance to the rhythm of music or video, respond to our actions, and be generated by computer programs. This expression of literary creativity in digital media is a window that shows us the future of the word in digital media. And it is important that our children -- who increasingly read, write, and play on digital devices -- become familiar with electronic literature so that they develop their creativity and digital skills. Presentation My presentation will discuss this emerging literary modality, identifying works, genres, and resources for exploring and enjoying electronic literature. I will offer a downloadable resource compiled exclusively for our audience of parents interested in exploring electronic literature with their children of today. Biography Leonardo Flores is a professor of English at the University of Puerto Rico: Mayagüez Campus and treasurer of the Electronic Literature Organization. In 2012-13 he was the Fulbright Scholar in the Digital Culture program at the University of Bergen in Norway. His areas of research are electronic literature (especially poetry) and its preservation through criticism, documentation, and digital archives. He is the creator and editor of an academic blog titled I ♥ E-Poetry. He is co-editor of the Electronic Literature Collection, Volume 3.
