This poem establishes a repetitive structure in three ways: the phrase “all fall down,” the animation which simulates the words falling down the screen, and the use of Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five,” which is highly recursive in its use of musical phrases. The strong musical and phrase pattern lend themselves to variation, enhancing subtle differences.
Speaking of differences, this work varies from the original pattern established by YHCHI by adding a line of text scrolling from right to left throughout the whole poem. This presents a real challenge for readers because they barely have enough time to read the text on the center of the screen, let alone follow along another stream of text. I suggest reading one and then the other, and then both together to be able to appreciate how all the “all fall down” phrases and the commentary that flashes between them are juxtaposed with the scrolling text .
